What does BIOPTICS mean?

BIOPTICS procedures combine the implantation of an artificial lens with laser eye treatment. The most common method is the implantation of an artificial lens in combination with LASIK. This treatment is usually carried out when the farsightedness is significantly greater than +4 diopters (dpt.) or the nearsightedness is much greater than -8 dpt.

How does a BIOPTICS operation work?

Treatment step 1 – lens surgery

In the first step, an artificial, intraocular or phakic lens is inserted in addition to the patient's own lens. Depending on the visual impairment and the required position of the lens in the eye, anterior chamber lenses (Artisan/Verisyse lens) or posterior chamber lenses (ICL lens) are used. All lenses have excellent optical properties, are highly flexible and made of highly biocompatible material. They are also invisible to the human eye. Which lens is suitable for you will be clarified in advance in an individual consultation. The procedure is carried out on an outpatient basis under local anesthesia and only takes a few minutes. Only one eye is treated per day, the operation on the second eye takes place a few days later. After the operation, the visual impairment of the eye is already largely corrected.

Treatment step 2 – LASIK

The second step, approximately 6 weeks to 3 months after the operation, is LASIK. LASIK is used to make a fine correction of any residual visual impairment or to correct any previously existing astigmatism. During LASIK, the corneal flap prepared during the first operation is opened up, the eye is then lasered and the flap is folded back again. It does not need to be sewn in place; it sucks itself back into the correct position.
