Glasses without Borders: A Look Behind the Scenes
“Glasses without Borders” would like to thank all LZW donors! But what actually happens with the collected glasses and what impact do these donations have?
The Way of Glasses
The collected glasses are either forwarded to the international aid organization LSF (Lunettes sans Frontières) in Alsace or to our glasses recycling centers at WIAF gGmbH in St. Wendel and the Gudd-Zweck glasses recycling center with EDA optician training workshop in Oberkirchen.
Lunettes without Frontières (LSF): From here, the glasses are sent to up to 56 countries, mainly French-speaking regions. These glasses offer people in need the opportunity to improve their eyesight, which significantly improves their quality of life.
WIAF gGmbH and Gudd-Zweck-Brillenverwertungsstelle: In these facilities, the glasses are cleaned, sorted and measured before being distributed to people in need in English- or Spanish-speaking countries.
The importance of glasses donations
In many poorer countries, children and adults do not have access to eye care and necessary corrective lenses. These vision problems can have serious consequences for the lives of those affected:
- Children: Visual impairment can lead to school failure, developmental delays and learning difficulties.
- Adult: Uncorrected vision problems can lead to unemployment and the inability to support the family.
- Older people: Vision problems can limit your independence and reduce your ability to perform daily activities.
Through the fundraising campaigns of “Glasses without Borders”, these people receive the support they need to improve their quality of life and better cope with their daily challenges.
